I’m playing Wurm Online along with Rage, Shadow and Burner. Burner still plays AO, the rest of us have pretty much decided to continue our break from AO at least until the engine is out. We’re tired of waiting on old promises. So, wtf is WU? it’s a sandbox MMO that runs on Java. It’s a bit medieval with realistic (as much as possible) skills. You can be anything, a tailor, farmer, miner, mason, fighter, sailor, alchemist, cook, smith… there are no classes, just skills. You work on the skill you want to improve and do anything you want. You can own land and build on it, hell you can build ANYWHERE (which is not owned by someone) even if you don’t own the land you’re standing on. There is a decay system, so maintenance is required of property and equipment. This decay is slowed down if you are on a deed (owned land) which is either yours or that belongs to your mayor. Each village/town/city has a mayor, who can invite you to the group (also anyone he has given the permissions to do so). If you want to check it out, make sure at the end of the tutorial you pick RELEASE as your server, that is where we are.

At this time, I’ll be giving anyone in MD who want to do city raids, the rank of Squad Commander. Just PM me in our private forums.

Merge is Live, so are new problems

Well, several Dragons, including myself were on break from AO waiting on the merge. Well, hell froze over and the merge happened this week. Lots of activity in the game, that is the good news. The bad news, is that we’ve all lost our prefs settings. All shortcut bars, gone. Names of backpacks, gone. Windows sizes and positions, gone. Channel configuration, gone. This also has affected everyone’s Inventory and Bank. Also if you had a custom GUI (like AOU MOD) active, it’s been reset to the original AO GUI. There are some ways to restore them, but they are not guaranteed since it’s something the AO community came up with, and not Funcom. Oh, did I mention FC fired the AO Producer and gave control over AO to the guy running TSW which is the reason why the whole company is in survival mode.

Neither myself, Shadow, Rage or Burner will be playing AO much this month. We’re having fun in Wurm Online, Personally I’m pissed that I have to work to get my characters to a playable state because FC once again failed to deliver a proper patch. I’ve spoken to programmers who told me that FC could have easily made an app to copy or transfer the old prefs to the new prefs folder. Oh well.

all I can say now is I definitely plan to have a server merge party. I will get in touch with Funcom and ARK about the matter, too. So far nothing is set in stone as long as I haven’t heard anything official, but it’s good to know the community will back us up on this.

I’ve contacted the acting GSP Director (Kriegshammer) asking if there is a planned GSP Merge Party/Celebration in the works. He has not replied yet, but I’ve offered in behalf of our org (in collaboration with AOSpeak and RecipeBook) to provide 2 billion creds for prizes for that event. I’ll keep you all up to the date on his reply.

Bot & AOSpeak Server Issues

Our bot is on the same server as AOSpeak, and it seems to be having some issues today. Our bot has been going online and offline for a few hours. I’ve sent word to the Admin of the server and hopefully it will be resolved by the end of the day.

Happy Winter-een-mas! Today is the first day of this gaming holiday.

Wintereenmas is a string of Holidays started in the Ctrl+Alt+Del comic strip by Tim Buckley. It covers seven days of gaming, each featuring a specific genre and having an emblematic “spirit” over it. The holiday lasts from January 25th to 31st each year.

January 25th: Adventure games, symbolized by a man dressed as Indiana Jones.

January 26th: First Person Shooter (FPS) games, with a 21 year-old sleep deprived gamer as its symbol.

January 27th: Fighting games, represented by a martial artist with too many blows to the head

January 28th: Real-time Strategy (RTS) games, whose emblem is a large bearded man with a pocket protector inside another pocket protector.

January 29th: Racing games, shown as a racer with old-fashioned racing helmet and racing goggles holding a detached steering wheel.

January 30th: Role Playing Games (RPGs), depicted as an elf-like woman holding floating dice above her left hand.

January 31st: Sports games, with a round, middle-aged man wearing a #10 jersey and holding a beer bottle in each hand as its emblem.

Wintereenmas has its own website that is fairly empty during most of the year. It has information and forums around the holiday. Many gamers recognize it and participate, and organized events are becoming more common each year, especially on college campuses where gaming groups may hold formal events to celebrate gaming.

Some gaming stores, most notably EB Games, recognize the holiday(s) and offer sales during that week.

Gaming groups, especially on campuses, have been hosting events outside of cyberspace. These events have been recorded in Minneapolis and Indiana. The official list of events is only kept online for the months around Winter-een-mas, so a complete list is not possible at this time. The holiday is widely reported to be celebrated by individuals and small groups, much like any other holiday, without a lot of fanfare.
